HMI Upgrade

An HMI Overhaul for the clients pharmaceutical plant has reduced the risk posed by aging hardware and out of support software

The Challenge

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most regulated sectors worldwide. Maintaining compliance with stringent standards while ensuring optimal production efficiency is a constant challenge. Like with all aging control systems the number of issues experienced with hardware was increasing and official support for an outdated HMI system was not satisfactory and starting to pose a potential risk to the business.

The Solution

Icon Automation was brought on board to upgrade the plant’s HMI system. The project involved a comprehensive overhaul of the existing server and client hardware, replacing it with modern equipment running on the latest software.
The HMI was migrated to ultilise the latest AVEVA System Platform software.

The Implementation

New Servers running VMWare Hypervisors were installed, 9 Virtual machines were setup and configured to accommodate the multiple roles and networks required for the system architecture.
The migration process was planned and built inhouse to minimize disruption to the plant’s operations. The Icon Team was able to test and resolve all migration issues and configure the hardware solution for maximum redundancy.

The Results

The new HMI system has significantly reduced the plant’s risk. The new hardware will ensure reliability and the new software provided allows the support contract to be fully utilised, as well as supporting future upgrades and modifications.

The successful completion of the HMI upgrade at the customers pharmaceutical plant underscores Icon Automation’s commitment to delivering top-notch automation solutions. The project not only enhanced the plant’s HMI system and reliability but also provides a base for future upgrades and analytics to be delivered.
